5 February Update

A lot has been going on, and due to the massive amount of projects that have piled up, Ive been lacking on posting routine entries here. Ill try to be brief (since there is a lot to cover):Back in the Game (feat. Victory) is included in the EML Recordings compilation album EML Network, Vol. 1. A release is planned for late March, and it will be available as a digital download through several online retailers.Collaborations are moving along with Doshus and Adam Pearson. All I can say is there is the possibility for another EP release with these new tracks, so well see what happens further down the road.Production is underway for Ghostly Encounters, a Halloween-themed full-length album scheduled for digital release on 12 October. The album will feature a combination of sound effects, a variety of trance & industrial rock tracks, and a small selection of new single tracks.I have been named the technical director for a friends stage production company. Our first production titled Same Time Next Year will open on 17 April and run through 25 April at Theatre Unlimited in North Hollywood. The script is still in development for Breaking Point, the film project that lead to my current full-length release of the same name. My part of the score has been completed for now, and Ill be working with my director on specific parts he needs when production starts on the film itself.

16 December Update

I know it has been a few weeks since I last made a post here, but ti goes without saying that being the busy man that I am, some things get put behind. I like to think that I manage the best I can with my time and expertise, and the past few weeks have certainly put both to the test. Just to give you a little update on what has been happening:Ive recently finished work on The Last Days of Judas Iscariot at The Raven Playhouse in North Hollywood. An old friend of mine was directing the show, and he asked me to help him out by taking on the role of Technical Director. Things were working out fine until the day of load-in, when his Assistant Director went over my head and proceeded to design the entire set himself (and poorly, I should add). Much to my dismay, we did the best we could to salvage the set, and thankfully, the cast saved the show from a possible disastrous demise (and the last minute addition of me running the sound board since the person assigned as run crew bailed out on my friend).Ive also recently finished two new Nine Inch Nails remixes from the album Year Zero. This is something more for my spare time when I dont have any new material to write, and it gives me a chance to practice my art using material Im familiar with. Besides, remixing songs by one of my favorite artists is definitely fun and challenging, so I say, why not do as many as I can? There is plenty more I can share about my work, and as anyone can see, I certainly enjoy what I do (with the exception of dealing with those who cant seem to understand their place in this profession). But Im not bitter or angry: more like annoyed and frustrated, but thankfully, those moments pass as quickly as they occur, so there is no need to be upset over what is and how it will turn out in the end. All I can do is continue to focus on doing what I feel is right within reason.</p>

10 November Update

One whole month without posting a new update. Not like I havent done that before, but needless to say, this time of year is the busiest for me, and trying to keep up with routines like posting new blog entries can be a little difficult sometimes. Now, Im not going to go into the whole check this out promotional rant (although there is a lot going on with that end, so visit my official website to see all the new happenings with my solo project), but I do feel the need to reflect on what has passed recently:To start, I have been looking back at which songs have become successful and which have been sitting on the side lines (for lack of a better term), and what Ive found is that the ones that are successful are the ones I did for other people and either got asked to share or thought it was a good business decision to do. I refer to Metro and Breaking Point of course, since these are the most popular tracks I have currently. For those who dont know, here is why:After re-writing Metro, it was requested on Jango (one of the leading online radio sites) and I was asked personally by Adam Bird, artist representative of the Independent Music Awards, to submit this track into the 9th annual competition.Breaking Point was originally written for a film project that a friend of mine is developing. He wanted some original music for his score, and I wrote this track at his request. After its completion, a new advertising campaign between ReverbNation and Microsoft Windows was planned. It would include established and independent artists from around the world, and submitted songs would be labeled as sponsored by Microsoft & given away as free downloads. It took some time, but upon its release through the program, Breaking Point received 805 downloads; 100 of which were in the first two weeks! In retrospect, I find the success of these two songs to be surreal. Its no surprise that my work has received this kind of attention since Im known for being the guy to get things done on time every time. It is just the nature of being a good technician. Where Im surprised is the fact that here is art that Ive created. It has been given great reviews by people I dont or barely know, and it stands on its own merit. I didnt make this happen: the people have made this happen, and it would seem that I have made decisions that have placed me at the right place at the right time in order for the people to make this all happen. Lets face facts: an artist is nothing without the respect & criticism of their peers and the support of their fans. This is just the way it works. We can write all the material in the world and we can shell out thousands upon thousands of dollars to make sure it is seen & heard, but who will listen? Who will critic the work? Who will share it with others? </p>Therein lies the difference between success and failure as artists. If I have done my job right (as I hope I have), then those who will appreciate it will pass it on for others to enjoy.

29 September Update

As the month is coming to a close, I have a chance to reflect on the latest updates that have happened:Breaking Point received 787 downloads, which is 687 more than than the cap limit given to us (the participating artists) for the Microsoft Windows Sponsored Song program!Revolution Rising, my new album (and my 1st full-length), is now available through all major online retail stores!Ventilations & Collaborations is now available as a monthly podcast through my official website. Click on the link to visit the site, and check out the blog and podcast under "Blog Updates".Metro (feat. Samurai MX) has been entered into the 9th Annual Independent Music Awards, and it's currently in the preliminary judging phase. I'm hoping it will move on to the celebrity judging phase this November, so we'll see what happens.I've finished the score track and 2 remixes for the film project. No word yet on the progress of the script or when production will start.Along with new solo track I'm writing, I've got one that's awaiting vocals from a colleague of mine.I'm working on another collaboration between two friends of mine, and I've been asked to do two more.So outside of my routine work around the holidays, my solo project is expanding to include many different projects along with the success that has been generated with Metro and Breaking Point. Kinda surreal when you think about it, but it's always good to be busy doing what you love. I'm very proud of the work I've done so far, and I'm excited about what will happen with the I.M.A.s and the collaboration tracks currently in production.I have to say that I wouldn't be where I am today without the support of my family, friends, colleagues, and fans. I mean this sincerely when I tell you that this is as much your success as it is mine, and I'm glad that I have the opportunity to share this with you all.
4 September Update

Feels good to be using the Flock browser to write this again (although, it may be temporary). It's been awhile since the last update, and so much has changed and improved.Metro (feat. Samurai MX) has gotten a lot of exposure recently, which surprises me somewhat. I once believed that this song would not go anywhere, and yet, it's now getting regular play on Jango, it's featured in Episode 3 of the Electronica Music Lovers podcast, and it's participating in the 9th Annual Independent Music Awards. What I feel changed was the addition of the sound effect I put in to book-end the song. What the song is now is the peppy, up-beat, house-style techno track that my best friend envisioned for the beginning, and the new effect drives home the premise behind the song.Breaking Point has earned me more exposure by participating in the Microsoft Windows Sponsored Song program through ReverbNation. It's received over 700 downloads on the last 3 months, and it slowly gains more every day. Personally, I can't wait to see how the song works out for the film it's written for (supposedly, it's starting production this December).Since Revolution Rising is complete and on its way toward its release date, I've been able to focus on re-writing the rest of the Brand New Relic set list to fit the needs of my solo project. Among the songs that are new-and-improved:The One I Left Behind (currently my Featured Song of the Month)Get Better (from The Human Condition - EP; originally tried to pitch it to the band, but it never went anywhere)Stereotypical (from Revolution Rising; a song we tried to write with David before his departure from the band, which lead to it being shelved indefinitely)Expression of Self (originally Express Yourself)Late Night Joy Ride (originally just named Joy Ride, now it's an intrumental dance track)Conflicting Thoughts (originally from the Beyond {A}wake set list)No Place in Complacency (originally Ocean View)Perfect Fantasy (originally Pillow Talk)Violence & Justice (from Revolution Rising)The Choice Remains (from Revolution Rising; the last song we tried to write together as a band)Needless to say, the rest of the unreleased songs will be featured in Ventilations & Collaborations (which I'm closer to releasing as a podcast as orignally intended). Speaking of the podcast option:I now have a new official website (jwhitmanmusic.com)! I've got all my info, free downloads, store links, photos, videos, and comments from my ReverbNation profile attached (including this blog), and I can update it freely and frequently. I don't have to worry about registering the domain name since it's covered under the really cheap monthly cost of maintaining the site (the cheapest I've found on the net to date). Now, the long-range plan for the site is to move the blog from here to the site (which should help with facilitating getting Ventilations & Collaborations turned into a monthly syndicated podcast), work on releasing Ventilations & Collaborations, Vol. 1 as a free downloadable album from the site directly come next June (its first anniversary), and possibly (only an idea right now) try to get my own forum running with an optional remix page. So, we'll see how things work out with these new ideas.I'm off to work on some new material (I've still got some remixes to do for the film and 2 demos-turned-new tracks to write).Blogged with the Flock Browser

Among the songs that are new-and-improved:

The One I Left Behind (currently my Featured Song of the Month)

Get Better (from The Human Condition - EP; originally tried to pitch it to the band, but it never went anywhere)

Stereotypical (from Revolution Rising; a song we tried to write with David before his departure from the band, which lead to it being shelved indefinitely)

Expression of Self (originally Express Yourself)

Late Night Joy Ride (originally just named Joy Ride, now it's an intrumental dance track)

Conflicting Thoughts (originally from the Beyond {A}wake set list)

No Place in Complacency (originally Ocean View)

Perfect Fantasy (originally Pillow Talk)

Violence & Justice (from Revolution Rising)

The Choice Remains (from Revolution Rising; the last song we tried to write together as a band)

Needless to say, the rest of the unreleased songs will be featured in Ventilations & Collaborations (which I'm closer to releasing as a podcast as orignally intended). Speaking of the podcast option:

I now have a new official website (jwhitmanmusic.com)!

So, we'll see how things work out with these new ideas.

I'm off to work on some new material (I've still got some remixes to do for the film and 2 demos-turned-new tracks to write).
Blogged with the Flock Browser

8 August Update

Seems like it's been forever since the last post I made, which is pretty close to the truth considering how much has gone on in the past month. I finally got into the Sponsored Song program at the beginning of July, and I passed the cap limit of 100 downloads in about 2 weeks. That number has been increasing every day, so it makes things kinda surreal for me. It's been a long time since the last time I was successful at something (working in the entertainment industry has given me consistent success), and it's a first for me to have a successful product of my own creation. Don't get me wrong here: The Human Condition - EP has done well with sales, and I've used that as a test subject for future releases. With the knowledge I've gained from that release, I've been more prepared to release the next album Revolution Rising (coming to online retailers on September 22nd). When I think about it, it explains the approach I took to release Breaking Point as an exclusive download for the program (for anyone who is interested, you can go to myspace.com/windows to get a copy for yourself and to take a listen to over 1,000 songs from established and independent artists). So, all is working according to plan. Of course, I can't leave out the rest of the updates, so here's a brief list of what's new:I've finished my remix of Survivalism by Nine Inch Nails, one of the artists I consider to be an influence of mine. Click on the link to take a listen!I've also posted my remix of Pachelbel's Canon in D to my ReverbNation profile. This is part of the work I've been doing for my friend's film project, and along with the title track, he likes it, so I must be doing something right. Click on the link to check out this track and others I've posted.Don't forget to take a listen to this month's submission to Ventilations & Collaborations! The link is provided below.I've been named the moderator of the Collaborations forum at Lyceum Musica, the artist and fan community founded by my friend and colleague, Adam Pearson. Click on the link to visit our website, and anyone is welcome to join us. Featured Song of the Month: Dance, People! (Get Your Groove On) Getting back on track: I've been working on some new material (mainly updating old songs from Brand New Relic), and although I've found a great direction for Conflicting Thoughts and The One I Left Behind, Ocean View and Pillow Talk are escaping me. I know I need to take some more time to develop the ideas before writing them, and I believe I've found some inspiration from a Nine Inch Nails song I listened to all the time when I was younger (Deep from the Tomb Raider soundtrack). Time to pay attention, folks: you're getting a front row seat to my creative process! Now, the concept of the beat from Deep can work for both, but it works better for Pillow Talk. I need to admit up front that the title and the lyrics need to be changed for Pillow Talk since the subject matter was fun for the band, but does nothing for my solo project (basically, it addressed the fantasies we all have, and that's not the approach I take with my own material). It makes sense for me to address the issue of the perfect beauty (or the mainstream concept of what that term is) as the message for the song. For Ocean View, I'm already working on rewriting some of the lyrics and changing the title (the working title is Contemplation), and the beat concept that comes to mind as I write this is from Every Day Is Exactly The Same (one of my favorite NIN songs). Also, I can forgo the beat entirely and just do it acoustically (kind of like the opening of The Great Destroyer). Figuring out the leads for guitar, bass, and synths is something I need to sit on for awhile since that's the part that escapes me right now. Joy Ride just has me stumped for now. I have no idea what to do with it, and I'm not in a position to think about what to do with that song yet, so future project on the back burner here. I've also been thinking about the idea of mxing some accoutsic versions of some of my songs (The One I Left Behind and The Choice Remains come to mind since they would be perfect for acoustic mixes). Might be interesting to pull off, so we'll see what happens. Crammed a lot of stuff in here for this update, I know, but I appreciate the time taken to read this. There's more where this came from, but that's for the next posting, so stay tuned!

Good news all around, so time to get to it:My song Breaking Point is now available as a free download from Microsoft WIndows! For anyone who is interested, just click on this link to get your copy.Revolution Rising, my 1st full-length album, will be released on September 22nd! All I have to do now is submit the release to my distributor, and all will be in order.I've been asked by my friend Adam Pearson to moderate for his new forum project. We're still working out the details on when and where (what website) this will take place.Work still continues with the "Breaking Point" film project. I still need to work on the remixes/covers that the writer/director wants for the soundtrack. So, all in all, a very productive month is coming up, so I can't complain. At least I'm doing what I love.
9 June Update

As I write this, these are the points to report:I'm working on 2 songs simultaneously (1 for the next album and 1 that is being reworked for the new showcase project). Speaking of which: I've recently launched a new monthly showcase called Ventilations & Collaborations. Every month, I'll be promoting a song that I've written that does not make my albums, songs I've made for films or t.v., and any remixes I do of my own tracks or more prominent artists. I figure it's a good way to get my songs more plays, and hopefully, it'll keep the fans interested in what I do. As an added bonus, I've given my street team a mission to get more plays, and the winner with the most plays of my songs gets the first digital copy of Revolution Rising, my 1st full-length album. On a side note, I'll be starting work soon with a friend of mine who is starting his own production company. I've been hired as a sound engineer, and things should pick up before the end of the year. Also, I'm still working on the music for Breaking Point, a film that's being written and directed by another friend of mine (the score track is done, and I still need to do some covers he has requested).I've put off doing live shows until I get more vocal tracks done, and I plan to start performing again once the new album is ready to be released. I'm looking at releasing Revolution Rising next year, however, if things go well for me, I might just release it later this year, so we'll see what happens. With that said, I'm off to work, and be sure to click on the link below to listen to this month's featured song....Keep the Revolution Rising!Featured Song of the Month:Metro (feat Samurai MX) Blogged with the Flock Browser

9 May Update

Another month has passed, and with it, many new opportunites have arisen. Here's the latest news:I'm still working on the music for my friend's film (the score is done, and I still have some covers to work on for him), and I'll be starting work soon with another friend's production company (maybe I can combine the two projects and get the film into production). I've also finished a new mix of one of my old tracks, and I'm still working on my next album (speaking of which, my Street Team has their first official mission posted). For the new album, I'm working on 1 new track now, and I've got 2 more to write now that my lyrics are free from my last band. For a new project I'm planning, I would like to offer Ventilations & Collaborations, a collection of new and old tracks that don't make it into my albums plus collaborative film scores and remixes I've done. I'll be showcasing one track every month in a TunePak, and I'll be offering free downloads as well. I'd like the opinion of my fans and colleagues before I start working out the details of this new venture; the primary question being, should I keep this as a fan-exclusive project only? We'll see what happens. As always, keep the Revolution Rising! We'll see what happens.

As always, keep the Revolution Rising!

Blogged with the Flock Browser

26 April Update

More news to report...As of last night, I've been removed from Between the Dark and Grey. Not happy about how it went down, but not much I can do to fix what happened. Life moves on, and as much as I don't want to have ill feelings toward Rick, he shafted me in a bad way. He gets to deal with the consequences that follow from his decision. I'm done worrying about it.So for some good news to report, my work is picking up quickly. Another election to do as inspector (yay...), I've got two old friends of mine that want me to work for them on 2 different technical projects, and my tracks might be used in a future feature film that a friend is writing the screenplay for. I just sent him the EP and 2 other tracks last night (after all the stuff went down with the band). So like I said, life moves on, and things are still progressing really well.So until next time, keep the Revolution Rising!
4 April Update

More progress to report...To start with the band projects, Between the Dark and Grey has finished a track which we posted online. Beyond {A}wake has 3 tracks done and a 4th in the planning since Sebastian has not written his drum tracks yet. However, I've given both bands the option of adding my production label name to their profiles in an effort to pool our resources and consolidate our projects under one roof. They seem optimistic about accepting, so we'll see what happens. I've started doing some cross promotion for each band, so click here to listen to the 3-track sampler I created for all 3 projects. For my solo project, I've got 1 new track finished (included with the sampler) and I'm working on the next one titled Believe. I'm also closer to getting into the Revolution '09 concert since I've sent one of the coordinators a TunePak of The Human Condition to listen to, and I just sent in the application to their website directly. I plan to have Believe ready for that concert if I get on the local talent bill, so it's all in God's Hands as always.Next week, I'll be in Olympia, WA to visit a friend of mine, so I'll see what I can do about posting some pics when I get back. It'll be good to go on vacation for once. Haven't done that... ever. But things are good, so I can't complain. I'm truly blessed these days.Until next time, keep the Revolution Rising!
More Good Press

I recently received this message from a colleague of mine at ReverbNation in relation to some tracks of mine. I recommended those tracks in response to a track he posted on his profile since it reminded me of my own work. It reads as follows:I'm listening to "Darkest Space" right now. The volume of the track is really well-mastered! Everything is perfectly crisp and audible. I can see what you mean about the ethereal feel; "Darkest Space" really does converge with "Wanderlust" in that respect. I find it interesting how the two songs take that same central ethereal feeling in different directions and play with it to create original compositions. So that even when they share common elements, they still stand alone as unique takes on the same basic emotion. :) "Revolution Rising" is epic! I feel like the song should be played in an epic final boss battle in a game like the Legend of Zelda or another of its caliber. Your blending of atmospheric whooshy sounds with crisp, striking drums is very clearly executed and seamless. Reminds me of an unreleased song that I wrote called "On Shores Remote" which aspires to a similar sort of epic RPG or film sound. Amazing work man. I'm happy that we can ride the same waves of feelings with our own unique styles. Our songs make great accompaniments to each other. :) Take care, Adam Blogged with the Flock Browser

18 March Update

More updates for you all:I've just finished mixing the latest track for Beyond {A}wake, and we're starting to record the last song for their demo. You can listen to the songs currently on their MySpace by clicking on this link. For my band, we've changed our name to Between the Dark and Grey, released our bass player Tim from the lineup, and we're looking toward auditions for bass players, so if you know of any that are in the Los Angeles area and have an interest in hard and classic rock, do let me know. Rick has also asked me to work with him on providing recording services for local bands, so more updates to follow on that end.For me personally, I've been inspired to write some new songs which I plan on releasing on the next album (I'm planning to make it a full-length album this time since the EP seems to be doing well). The current working titles are Rule Breaker and Believe, and the album title is Revolution Rising (who didn't see that coming?) Also, with Tim's departure, I've taken one of my band's song lyrics (Violence & Justice) and I'm working on updating it for my project. With the thematic and observational nature of that song, I think it will work well on the next album. So, I've got 3 new songs lined up to work on, and I haven't decided on a release date yet for the new album (then again, it still needs editing, mixing, and arranging all around, so all things come to those who wait).Still no word on the Revolution, but I need to contact someone that Rob from C28 suggested that heads up the planning for the concert. With that said, stay tuned for more updates, and keep the Revolution Rising!
11 March Update

It's been a few days since my recent live performance at the +Good Hurt+, and that was a unique experience to say the least. The good news is that I had a blast performing their for the second time. Mainly did the DJ thing, but it went well with no major mess-ups. The bad news was a small crowd, but that's to be expected from the opening act of the night. However, I did get asked to do an encore, so I pulled out my masterpiece (Revolution Rising) to end the set. Can't complain there. My brother was able to get the video of the set (most of it, anyway), and I've posted the video of Revolution on my website and my various online profiles. I had my camera set for HD and it came out really nice.On to band-related news:Beyond {A}wake has their first finished song on their MySpace, and it sounds beautiful; 10x better than the quality Rick and Mando wanted. I've also been told that Rick's guitar teacher likes the track as well, so I know I'm doing something right. My band has changed its name and its direction, so I'll be updating you all with the latest news from Between the Dark and Grey (we feel it fits with our vision as artists). For solo project-related news:I'm still in negotiations with the C28 store manager to get myself onto the local artist ticket for the Revolution concert this fall, so all is in God's Hands on that. Plus, I'm still working on the new track entitled Believe. The lyrics are done; I just need to work out the beat sequences and physically write the track. So all is well, and things are moving along as they should.
27 February Update

Another update from the Revolution Rising:Concerning the band I'm with, we've recently had another long discussion about what we want as a direction and sound, and we've decided to change our name to match that direction. More news on that will follow soon. We're still working on our "demo" (if you can call it that), and we've switched to the program I use, GarageBand, for recording. We've fixed a lot of our issues using this, and since I know the program inside and out, it's easier for me to use.On my side, I'm still waiting to hear from the Valley Revolution, and I'm working on a new track (which now that I think about it, I need to finish that and post it soon, regardless of its message). So stay tuned for more updates from my solo project. To all my fans here and abroad:I need your help with promoting my solo project. There's only so much I can do on my own, and as an artist, I can't survive long without the help of my fans. Do your part for the Revolution Rising by grabbing some banners and widgets here and posting them throughout the net. Street Team, I know that I don't have much in the way of prizes for you all yet, but your help in spreading the word is vital to any artist, including myself, and it's greatly appreciated.Until next time, keep the Revolution Rising!
10 February Update

More progress to report...I'm pleased to announce the launch of my official website and online community. Hopefully, I can get a good fan base going through the new site, and they in turn can help me with developing new material as well as me encouraging others to develop their projects. Speaking of which:I'm helping out my good friend and band-mate Tim with his solo project that he's starting. He (like myself) wants to take his artistic vision into the darker recesses of rock, although we differ with his punk and metal influences and my hard rock and trance electronica influences. But what he's planning to write is off to a good start. He just needs to refine it a bit, and get the riffs he has planned pointed into a direction that makes sense to him. I'll admit that there is only so much I can do to help him, but what I can offer is some advice and technical expertise. For those who are interested, I've created my own logo and banner, which is available through ReverbNation for posting, and it headlines my website (well, a bit of it; but it works). Also, my next live performance is coming up on March 8th, so check my show schedule online for more information.Hope to see you all on my website and at the next gig! Keep the Revolution Rising!
More progress to report...

I'm pleased to announce the launch of my official website and online community. Hopefully, I can get a good fan base going through the new site, and they in turn can help me with developing new material as well as me encouraging others to develop their projects. Speaking of which:

I'm helping out my good friend and band-mate Tim with his solo project that he's starting.
